Warning Signs Before Pressure Sores Develop

A bedsore is an ulcer caused by prolonged pressure and friction on the skin and underlying tissues, preventing blood from circulating to the skin. The tissues become deprived of oxygen and eventually die. They usually occur over bony prominences close to the skin, such as the tailbone, hips, heels, lower back, shoulders, and elbows.
4 Warning Signs
- Skin color changes: In people with lighter skin, it appears as clear red marks. In people with darker skin, it may appear as dark or purplish patches.
- Abnormal skin temperature: Feels warmer or cooler than the surrounding area, indicating abnormal blood circulation.
- Localized pain or itching: Sharp pain, itching, or a burning sensation in the back, hips, or heels.
- Peeling or thinning skin: The skin starts to peel or develops small sores that may seem insignificant at first glance but are signs that the tissue is beginning to break down.
If these signs are observed, you should change the patient's resting position every 2 hours and use a mattress or cushion that helps distribute pressure.
